Make Your Photos Stand Out In Antique Picture Frames

By Ned Dagostino

Mass production can be a good thing. It allows us as consumers to purchase the products we want and need at affordable prices. And it makes those products easily available to us when we want them. But there's a down side to mass production as well, and some products are simply better when they are made by hand. Antiques were, for the most part, made by hand. And they are growing in popularity because of it.

This definitely applies to antique picture frames. These frames will show off your favorite pictures or artwork in a way that a store bought frame simply cannot. They will not only protect those cherished possessions, but draw attention to them.

If you have a photo in a store bought frame it probably looks pretty nice, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But move that picture to an antique frame and it will take on a whole new aura. It's not something that is easily explained, but it is easily noticed.

Think about this. You have a very old photograph of your great grandmother as a child. Now imagine that same picture in a frame that she owned. It would certainly give that photo extra meaning.

Now not everybody has a frame like this. In that case, imagine that photo in a frame made from the same time period. All of a sudden you have something more than a picture with a border around it. Looking at it, you'll feel as if the photo and frame were made for each other. The eyes of you and your guests will be drawn to it. And you'll love hearing the comments you are sure to receive.

And with an antique frame there's very little reason to worry about quality. I'm not some old timer who thinks everything made in my day was better than it is today. But I do think that when you buy an antique, you're getting something that you know was handmade with pride and quality. That's still available today, just not as often.

Everything was handcrafted then. And a true artist could provide spectacular detailing. Look closely and you'll see it. Like we said, there are still frame makers today that can provide great quality, but as we mentioned, quality is not the only reason to go with an antique. It's just one of many.

But as with everything else, there's a catch. And in this case, the catch is generally the price. Some people think they probably can't afford a true antique. And the fact is, that these frames can be quite costly. More than once I've gone into an antique store and almost fainted when I turned over the price tag. And that hold true whether you are looking at a wood frame, or one made of silver or gold.

Many people will now do one of two things. They will either give up and go to their local discount store, or they fork over their money thinking they have no other choice. But there is another and better choice. You should be patient and look around. Check local consignment stores and look online. If you take your time, you will eventually end up with the frame you are looking for at a price you can afford.

And when that happens, go ahead and buy it. Bring it home or have it shipped to you. Then display that favorite photograph and right away you'll see the difference.

Your guests and family members will notice the difference as well. - 31404

The Cigar Ageing Process Explained

By Joe Shelman-Walm

It's true that some things just get better with time. Pain, wine and yes Cigars also are enhanced by the ageing process. A well aged cigar displays subtleties in flavour, the mellowness. It's the reason why some people will pay high sums to enjoy a vintage cigar that has been aged in the right way. But don't worry, you won't necessarily need to hand over all your cash to enjoy the flavour and complexity of a well aged cigar, with a little care, the right tools and some patience, you can get started ageing your own cigars at home.

Start with a quality cigar if you are going to age them yourself. If you use a cheap cigar, you will probably be disappointed with the end result and the time will have been wasted. It takes about a year for the ageing process to complete. This is probably the minimum time you should allow. A rule of thumb when choosing is to find one that you find too strong or odourous, and this will probably be a good candidate.

You will be ageing your cigar for about a year, but in order to do so, you need to buy a good quality cigar humidor. The humidor is needed so that you can store the cigar(s) in a suitable and stable environment. Storing the cigars using the 70-70 rule is best. That is at a constant humidity of 70% and a temperature of 70 degrees fahrenheit.

Maintaining the 70-70 rule helps to ensure a smooth ageing process. Any fluctuations may produced inferior flavour. Constant changes will cause the cigar to expand and contract, as with most things that contract and expand with heat cracking can result and this is something you don't want as it can make the ageing process ineffective.

When buying your cigar humidor, try to buy one with a cedar lining. The oils in the wood are aromatic and these mix with the oils in the tobacco over time. Ideally the space in the humidor should be about twice the volume of the cigars that it holds. Getting the mix right will help the ageing of your cigar will result in a quality cigar once the process is finished, one that you can enjoy, and one that won't cost you the earth. - 31404
