The Toy Fire Truck - How We Love Them!

By Michelle Rudge

I've been surprised to find that information about the beloved toy fire truck is very difficult to find! The internet doesn't have very much content (unless I'm using the wrong words to search) and even my local library had very few books. So this little article compiles the information that I have been able to find in an easy to read format... whether it's a special gift for a child or an antique to add to your collection.

Even though it's hard to find information, you'll be pleased too know that there is no shortage of options when looking for a toy fire truck. Whether it's a soft toy for a new baby, or a ride-on pedal car for an older child, there is plenty to choose from. One of the best places for toy fire trucks is Amazon, they're range is huge.

There are those of us that don't wish to have our toy fire trucks trashed but are collectors of models. Collectors tend to be those passionate about the fire fighting industry and have a great attention to detail and an eye for accuracy. There are many forums on the internet, particularly those associated with model manufacturers.

And then there is the antique market. Somewhat more of a specialized area, the first toys were produced in the late 19th Century by 3 manufacturers that I have noted in literature on the antique industry. These 3 are: Dent Hardware & Co, Hubley Company & Kenton Lock Manufacturing Co (Kentontoys). The first models were cast-iron but moved to die-cast due to rising competition from overseas.

So that's a little bit about the toy fire truck and shows their popularity even to this day. Whether it be a toy for a child, or a special antique for a bigger child (!) hopefully, you'll now be more informed than when you arrived. - 31404
